Having drawn the previous encounter with the Black pieces, Gareth now had white in his return match against Mike Walters.

Gareth built up a solid attacking position and managed to gain some space with black’s light squared bishop blocked in by his pawn for a lot of the game and an ‘attacking knight’ struggling to find a good square. Whites 22nd move Q-h5 followed by 23.f3 and 24. h4 created additional pressure and induced a mistake with black playing Nf5 losing a whole piece after the Queen calmly moved out of the way of the knight’s path.

Black fought on valiantly for a further 20 moves but Gareth was not going to relinquish this game with a full piece advantage.
