ENGAME STUDY

The enclosed endgame is a position reached by Trowbridge ‘s Dave Marshall in the final Round of the Blackpool Congress. Whilst Hebden was busy trying to win his final round for a share of the prize money, match Dave was involved in a four hour marathon himself with a strong 128 graded opponent! Fatigue having set in Dave sadly blundered a Bishop away with no compensation. However, his position was so strong he would have been able to draw had he just played the natural move K x  P. Sadly, and understandably Dave thought he was losing and tried to mix things up with a3, quickly losing. At the lower levels of analysis Fritz found it difficult to draw which aptly illustrates the difficulties, however, it can be clearly seen that this is a draw as long as the white King stays within striking distance of the remaining black pawn and moves his passed pawn if necessary at the appropriate juncture.  This is jone of the main lines.

Set it up on the board or Fritz and try it for yourself!
