Its not often you see a checkmate on the battlefield but here is an example where the diagonal is sadly missed, after recognizing the danger the previous move! White (M Taylor) enjoys the first twenty or so moves and has more space to work with, but our erstwhile battle hardened Derek breaks out in dramatic style and finishes the dual with his all conquering Queen.

 

White can only offer Qh2 on move 32 as a defence, and whilst this does stop the imminent mate, and there is still plenty of play left, black now still has a distinct advantage, and our computer reveals, that his would still inevitably lead to a slow death in nearly all variations. Perhaps the quick blow was more humane and saved a slow lingering demise!
