ENGAME STUDY
The enclosed endgame is the critical position reached by Trowbridge ‘s Gareth Williams in the Cup Final v Yeovil. An early opening error meant that Gareth had to endure a tremendously cramped position from move 8, also leading to an exchange down (Rook for knight). Mark Baker should have had a comfortable win, however as we all know chess is a funny old game and Gareth had used 55 minutes less on the clock. (yes just 20 minutes compared to 1 hour 14 minutes!) at the time control. Whilst still having the advantage there was not enough time for white to calculate the complexities and Mark offered a draw after a few more moves. Gareth played 1…...d6 which was slightly inaccurate, but good enough taking into consideration the clocks. This is one of the more interesting lines that Fritz offers, where a draw is reached with perpetual check and Black has a potential mate in one!
Set it up on the board or Fritz and try it for yourself! Just to make it difficult the moves are hidden, but if you CLICK ON THE ARROWS the pieces will move!!
