Steve is an ‘honorary’ member of the Trowbridge chess club having accompanied, the boys on several trips over the last few years. Steve not only drinks excessively throughout the Blackpool weekend, but this year went one further and joined us ‘fresh’ from a drinking stint at  Cheltenham (Gold Cup) where he regularly hands over crisp notes to a perfect stranger in the forlorn hope that the stranger might increase his return assuming ahis crippled horse manages to beat several other fighting fit stallions.

This year the alcohol might have proved too much as Steve only managed 2 points (two losses , two draws 1 win). This game however is a good example from Steve as to how to handle a Sicilian (2 ...a6 variation) and his opponent could easily have resigned after move 23.
