This is an interesting game played between Mark Leonard and Roy Ludlow in this year’s Wiltshire Closed Championship. Roy knows the French Defence like most people know their partners, and will give all-comers an exceptionally tough game.

Unfortunately for Roy, his opponent is on a winning streak and had prepared a very sharp line -The Jackal attack (yes named after Frederick Forsyth’s novel). After some very interesting play by both sides move 27 sees Mark doubling his Rooks on the b file which gives him a strong space advantage (and an open file) which he is able to exploit and gain a little tempo,  whilst the white King rampages forward and exploits a small  advantage in pawn structure he had built up.
