We’ve all heard of Schubert’s unfinished symphony and here we have the Trowbridge CC version. This is an amazingly long and hard fought struggle from the veteran of our club Paul Hatvany and Brown Jack’s Mike Rabbit. Heavily outgraded, Paul puts up an amazing struggle with a frantic Queen v Kingside pawn chase.
Post match analysis reveals a potential Queen sacrifice missed by Black at move 24..Qh3! after the initial jockeying for position, and although Paul eventually lost move 48.RXR may have afforded him an easier endgame?
Due to the complexity of the position both players felt unable to write down the last five minutes’ moves, hence at this time the enclosed score-sheet bears a resemblance to our aforementioned musician’s effort, and the starting position represents the last move written down by Paul - an interesting position in itself. Click on the arrow (<<) to start at the setup position and enjoy a fascinating tussle.
